Metposts are an easy alternative to fix a fencing post into the ground, the alternative is to concrete the post into the ground.
Okay metposts are great in the right conditions only, they're aimed at the home DIY market as they are fairly easy to use, if you plan to install garden fencing posts on to clean ground i.e. no concrete or rocks and stones under the earth.
If there are rocks or stones underground this type of post support will not be suitable the reason is because as you try to thump the metpost into the ground it will twist and skew so when you come to fit the wooden post into the slot the post will not be level.
There are various types of metpost, some can be concreted into the ground and some can be driven into an old broken post, also they can be bolted on to a concrete surface or brick wall, in these cases they can make light work of a difficult job
Also note that after time the steel may stretch resulting in your post becoming wobbly, this is why as a good fencing contractors point of view is to use the conventional method of concreting the post into the ground. any good fencing contractor would recommend concreting.
Concreting a wooden post into the ground is by far the best way, as I said earlier you can also concrete the metpost but it is still possible that the metal will stretch in time.
The metpost some years ago used to be made with 4/5 mm thick steel but nowadays seem to be made of 3 mm steel, if you are going to use this type of fixing post support then be very careful on what type you choose and what make I recommend only using the branded genuine metpost
I personally avoid using them as a rule unless absolutely necessary, as I said they are okay in the right environment but in my opinion are just okay
