Post and Rail Farm Fencing fencing is great for using on farms and small holdings, plus it is particularly good for animal enclosures.
It is made up of 3 inch x 2 inch or 4 inch x 2 inch rails and wooden or concrete posts, it can be used for containing horses and cows and large animals, it is also possible to attach stock fencing or wire mesh as a defense against rabbits etc.
The posts that hold the rails are generally concreted into the ground or thumped with a post-thumper into the ground. The posts can either be square 4x4 or machine rounded wooden posts, this type of fencing can also be used in the domestic garden environment.
Depending on the height of the fencing either to rails three rails or in some cases for rails can be used, i.e. height between three foot and 3 foot six to rails should be used, if the height is to be 3 foot 6 inches and 4 foot 6 inches then three rails should be used, anything above up to 5 foot 6 inches then four rails would be used.
When using this type of fencing recommended wood would be tanalised softwood or oak, oak is the best material to use but does come with a price tag. oak will not need to be treated but softwood will need to be treated annually.
Explanation of tanalised wood: Wooden products are often tanalised - impregnated under pressure with highly toxic substances such as arsenic - to protect against rot.
