Here is a recommended guide of what material to use and how to apply
When staining your fence and fencing posts you should take careful consideration on what material to use, in my opinion water-based wood stain is by far the best to use. The reason for this is water-based stain seeps deep into the grain of the wood.
I would highly recommend the branded wood stains such as Cuprinol or Ronseal.
Take note
Coloured wood stain such as green or blue tends to be oil based and therefore does not impregnate the grain of the wood anywhere near as well as a water-based stain.
Another option to consider is to use a clear water seal, again there are a number of products on the market which will do the job wicks home base and suchlike stock this material. When applied this does not change the colour of your fencing but is an excellent water repellent.
Consideration when staining
Take care to cover all of the fence panel in all the nooks and crannies giving a good generous coating to ensure the rain will not penetrate your fencing.
How to apply your wood stain
In my opinion a brush is the only way, I find a paintbrush works much better then any other way, the spray machines on the market tend to overspray and cover plants etc with a fine mist, also I found that the spray machines can easily leave runs down fencing panels.
Take care when treating your fencing that the wood stain does not seep through to the opposite side of the panel you are painting, the only way to ensure this does not happen is to apply the stain by hand.
Do not apply to much stain unless you intend to cover both sides of the fence panel.
